Back To School: Sample Tests

It’s that time of year again! The kids are heading back to school and that means they’ll soon be bringing home spelling words to study for their weekly tests. Why not get a head start by using some of the sample tests we’ve created for you.

Many Super Speller users have requested a selection of sample tests, so we’ve added several to our Sample Tests page. For each grade, first through fifth, we added three sets of sight words tests. We used sight words for these tests as those are the words most used in reading.

These tests will hopefully prove useful study material and give new Super Speller users some ideas for creating their own tests. We hope you find these tests useful and, as always, keep the suggestions coming. We will continue to do our best to make Super Speller the best spelling app for our kids and yours!

Super Speller 3.0

We’ve had so many discussions with friends and parents about Super Speller, and how much it has helped our son with spelling. Many of these conversations have ended with something like: “That sounds fantastic, I’m going to get that for my child! iPad only? Oh, we only have an iPhone”. The release of version 3 changes that because Super Speller is now a universal app which runs on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touches!

We were initially a little hesitant to create an iPhone version since we weren’t certain how well it would translate to a smaller screen, but after a lot of thought and hard work, we managed to bring every feature from the iPad to the iPhone version as well. We think it turned out pretty awesome and we hope you do too.

iPhone support is a pretty huge addition, but it’s not the only thing we added to Super Speller 3. Since Super Speller can run on iPads and iPhones, we wondered how we could make it easier to share tests and test results between different devices. Sure emailing tests is pretty easy, but we thought it would be great if getting tests on all of your devices was something you didn’t even have to think about, and so we’ve added support for iCloud.

When creating or editing a test, you can toggle iCloud on or off. When it’s on, the test and test results will be automatically synchronized between all devices using that iCloud account. There are several situations where this will be handy for us and hopefully for you as well. For example, we may have left the iPad at home while we’re on the way to school. We don’t have to worry about whether or not the test was sent to our iPhone, it will just be there and our son can practice his spelling on the way using the iPhone. And any test results will automatically synchronize back to the iPad waiting at home. Also, any of the test results from tests he takes on the iPad will be sent to the iPhone where we can check on his progress anywhere or any time.

iPhone and iCloud support were pretty huge and we wanted to get them to you as soon as possible, but that doesn’t mean we’re stopping there. We’ve received a ton of feedback and feature requests from our awesome users and we’ll continue to improve Super Speller as time goes on.

Super Speller 3 is available today on the App Store for $2.99.

Super Speller: It’s not just for spelling!

I was entering my son’s spelling words into Super Speller this week and was thinking how much easier this app has made our lives. Five months into it and he is still making a 100 on every spelling test in school! As I was entering and recording his words, I started thinking that there are other things I could do with Super Speller that goes beyond just spelling.

First, I must admit that I love doing the word search and word scramble. I have found myself doing these after I add his new words in each week. I am also known to create tests with words for myself just so I can play. So the other day as I was volunteering at his school, I was really wishing that I had learned Spanish. I had another parent trying to communicate with me and neither of us knew what the other was saying. Then it hit me… I bet Super Speller can help!

So now I have started my journey toward learning to speak Spanish. The wonderful thing about Super Speller is when you are recording, you can say whatever you want. I can create a test and type any Spanish words I want to learn. For example, say I would like to learn the word for mother in Spanish. First, I would type the word “madre” on the spelling word line. Next, I would record “what is the word for mother”. Once I have my test created, I am ready to study. When I study, I can hear the English word and see the Spanish word. When I take my test I am ready to type the Spanish word for mother.

Of course you can create the test however you would like. If you prefer to hear the Spanish word, you can always say the word in your recording. I have found that there are many ways to study a foreign language with Super Speller. You just have to find what works best for you.

I was discussing with my daughter, who is in high school, that she would be able to use this app when she starts her foreign language next year. She told me that she actually wanted to start using it now to help her study for her History tests. She explained to me that she could type the answers to the questions on the spelling word line and for her recording, ask the question to that answer. I was amazed!

What started out as an app to help my son with spelling has turned out to do so much more! I hope that other Super Speller users are also finding many other possibilities to enrich their child’s and their own knowledge.

Super Speller v2.1

The latest version of Super Speller is here! Version 2.1 adds several refinements, but the big news is the addition of the new word scramble study activity. We think it’s pretty awesome and we hope you do too. In word scramble, each word is presented as a series of wooden tiles stamped with a letter which can be arranged by dragging them into the correct positions to form a word. Take a look.

Can you unscramble this word?

In addition, we know that English isn’t the only language people are using with Super Speller and we wanted to make sure that we can handle any character set you decide to throw at it. Here are a few examples:

Greek

Russian

Even Cherokee!

Doesn’t the Cherokee alphabet look awesome?. What about a word search in Cherokee? Yeah, we can do that too.

Cherokee word search

Super Speller 2.1 with word search and improved support for non English languages is now available on the App Store. We hope you’ll check it out!
